Govt Introduces 20,000 Registration Fee For Select University and College Students
As an indexing fee, university and college nursing students from both public and private institutions will be obligated to remit Ksh20,000.
This occurred after the Nursing Council of Kenya’s (NCK) proposition to raise the charge from the existing amount of Ksh9,550.
PoliticalPulseChat has observed that nursing students enrolled at the University of Nairobi are reportedly in a haste to remit the Ksh9,550 deposit before the implementation of the Ksh20,000 fee.
The Nairobi University Students’ Association (NUNSA) issued a notice to its members instructing them to remit the previous fee before the implementation of the new one.
“To avoid the additional fees, all comrades who are able and capable of doing so promptly should submit their payments,” NUNSA advised nursing students.
In contrast, the University of Nairobi Students Association (UNSA) has declared its intention to resist the action.
โThis is divide and rule tactic. Today it is nursing students, tomorrow it will be medicine students,โ one of UNSA officials speaking to PoliticalPulseChat stated.

The student leader stated that UNSA would investigate every possible avenue to petition and oppose the nursing indexing fee doubling.
The indexing fee will also have an impact on students enrolled in midwifery programs to practice in Kenya after completing their studies.
Typically, students are obligated to remit the indexing charge within sixty days after their enrollment in a training institution.
โThe Council through its Indexing Section verifies submissions to ensure that students admitted to training schools meet the minimum admission criteria for their program of choice,โ NCK states on the reason for paying the registration fee.
โThe indexing details are to track your progress through training and determine your eligibility to sit the Councilโs licensure examination.โ
Students who remit the mandatory payment are allocated a distinct index number which serves as a permanent point of reference for the duration of their medical profession.
