The National Biosafety Authority (NBA) is seeking public feedback from Kenyan citizens on the environmental release of a newly developed genetically modified maize variety.

In a gazette notice dated December 6, the authority announced that it had received an application for the open cultivation and environmental release of genetically modified maize.

โ€œThe NBA informs the public that it has received a request for environmental release, open field cultivation, and marketing of genetically modified maize (Zea mays), also known as Bt maize (MON 89034),โ€ the notice stated.

The application, submitted jointly by the Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO) and the African Agricultural Technology Foundation (AATF), invites public opinions to guide the decision on the maize’s release to farmers.

According to the notice, this Bt maize was engineered using modern biotechnology to resist pests like maize stem borers and fall armyworms, which significantly damage maize crops.

โ€œThis innovation can help reduce crop losses, improve harvests, and enhance grain quality,โ€ the statement highlighted.

The notice also pointed out potential benefits, including lower production costs and reduced reliance on insecticides, minimizing risks to human health and the environment.

Currently, the maize is undergoing rigorous testing to ensure its safety for human and animal consumption, as well as its environmental compatibility.

If approved, further evaluations will take place to assess its performance in different maize-growing regions across Kenya.

Citizens interested in contributing their views can access the application on the official NBA website, www.biosafetykenya.go.ke, or visit the NBA offices to submit their feedback.

โ€œAs required by law, the NBA is soliciting public comments on the environmental release and cultivation of Bt maize in Kenya,โ€ the statement added, noting that the consultation will last 30 days.

This initiative follows the recent lifting of a ban on Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) by the High Court, a decision made just a month ago.

Despite strong support from President William Ruto, GMO introduction has faced significant hurdles in Kenya.

After a decade-long ban on GMOs was lifted in 2022, Bt maize was initially introduced but faced another ban before the High Court permanently lifted restrictions on November 7.

The NBA has also published regulations mandating individuals involved in GMO importation, cultivation, or introduction to secure government approval and adhere to strict guidelines. Non-compliance could result in penalties of up to Ksh20 million or ten years in prison.
