Govt Changes Half Term Dates for Primary & Secondary Schools

The Ministry of Education has made changes to the mid-term break dates for students in pre-primary, primary, and secondary schools.

In a letter dated May 24, Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang informed all learners and their instructors that the mid-term break would now be from June 26 to June 28.

Initially, the calendar had stated that the mid-term break would be from June 20 to June 23.

According to the letter addressed to all county directors of education, students in boarding schools were also instructed to return by June 30, 2024.

A memo explained that the mid-term dates for the second term of 2024 needed adjustment due to the disruption of opening dates.

The change might necessitate alterations to planned activities and schedules.

The memo was sent to Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu, the CEO of the Teachers Service Commission, the CEO of the Kenya National Examinations Council, and all regional directors of Education.

Recipients were then directed to ensure that all head teachers and principals were informed of the circular’s contents.

Earlier, President William Ruto ordered schools to reopen on Monday, May 13, two weeks later than initially planned, due to the severe impact of the flood crisis.

Initially, schools were set to reopen on Monday, April 29, but Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu postponed the reopening due to the floods.

Machogu had stated that schools would reopen a week later due to safety concerns arising from heavy rains.

The floods had resulted in over 200 fatalities, over 200,000 people displaced, and nearly 2,000 schools damaged.
