Governor Nassir Says Raila’s 2027 Presidential Candidature ‘Not Negotiable’

Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Sheriff Nassir has given his support to Raila Odinga, the leader of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party, for the presidential election in 2027.

Addressing the crowd on Thursday in Ukunda as part of the ongoing ODM party membership drive, Nassir insisted that the leader of the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition should contest the presidential election for the sixth time, emphasizing that this was a non-negotiable matter.

The newly elected Governor contended that Mr. Odinga’s political experience has been thoroughly evaluated, making him the most fitting contender to positively impact the lives of Kenyans and follow in the footsteps of President William Ruto.

“I have seen the news headlines ‘Raila hints at the presidency for 2027’…I know you have not made me the ODM spokesperson or your spokesperson, I speak for the people of Mombasa, the Coast, and Kenyans,” he said.

“We are not asking, we are not requesting or pleading, we the people of Kenya are commanding you to vie for presidency for 2027. You must be on the ballot in 2027.”

Governor Nassir praised the ex-premier for his patriotism throughout his political journey, emphasizing that he is the ideal candidate at this moment to replace Ruto and positively transform the country’s prospects.

“We have not seen anyone who has been able to put aside his own ambitions and put forward the needs of Kenyans. If there is someone who should be prayed for, it is Odinga,” he stated.

The Governor’s comments come in the wake of alleged indecision within the coalition regarding the choice of Azimio, the opposition coalition’s candidate for the upcoming elections.

Kalonzo Musyoka, the co-principal of Azimio and leader of Wiper, has been advocating for his candidacy, aiming to secure backing from fellow co-principals, including Mr. Odinga.

“If I was ready in 2002, 2013 why do you think I will not be ready in 2027? The right time has come for this country to recognize a leader they have always rejected. I have played the team…I have selflessly supported others. If the country is ready for it, I will go for it,” he previously said in an interview with NTV.

“Giving up my presidential ambitions will actually mean I go home. We are at the tail-end of a process that should deliver this country. Azimio will give Ruto a strong candidate this time around.”

Mr. Odinga has chosen not to comment on the 2027 election, asserting that there is no alleged discord within the coalition. He insists that the leaders will ultimately unite in support of a single candidate.
