Government Unveils Nationwide School Bus Safety Plan: Stop Arms & CCTV to Prevent Accidents
Kipchumba Murkomen, the Transport Cabinet Secretary, announced that the government has completed the drafting of a policy aimed at regulating the utilization of school buses nationwide.
In a statement released on Tuesday, March 19, Murkomen disclosed that the plan includes the implementation of stop arms on school buses, a measure observed in other nations like the United States of America.
Furthermore, it will be mandatory for school buses to have monitors onboard to improve the safety of children, particularly those transporting preschool and elementary school students.
Additionally, he mentioned that school buses must be equipped with CCTV cameras installed to ensure the safety of students.
The CS additionally outlined that every school vehicle will be equipped with technology capable of monitoring their movements while traveling on the roads.
Murkomen indicated that the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) is in the process of completing the specifications for the devices.
“We have finalized the drafting of the School Transport Rules aimed at better regulating and enhancing safety in the transportation of our children.

“These regulations contain the provisions that will Make it mandatory for those building school buses to include material and technology that will protect passengers in case of accidents,” read the statement in part.
In his instruction, Murkomen also unveiled fresh strategies aimed at reducing the increasing incidents of accidents in the nation.
One of the actions he mentioned would be enforced is the introduction of compulsory medical examinations for every driver nationwide. Additionally, the reevaluation of all drivers and conductors of Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) will be reinstated.
“The National Police Service and NTSA to intensify the ongoing nationwide enforcement and impound all unroadworthy vehicles and those not integrated with the intelligent road safety management system for transmission of speed limiter data.
“In conclusion, as we approach the Easter festivities and closing of schools, we shall be working closely with the NPS and monitoring the enforcement of traffic laws and regulations,” the CS added.
Murkomen issued the instructions following a weekend where more than 10 individuals, including students, lost their lives in accidents.
