Government Seeks Ksh 49 Billion World Bank Credit for Development

On Tuesday, July 4, the Ministry of Lands announced that the government had applied for a Ksh 49 billion (approximately USD 350 million) loan from the World Bank.

The State Department of Housing and Urban Development revealed in a notice. That the loan would be used to help the government of President William Ruto. Implement the second phase of the Kenya Urban Support Programme (KUSP2).

As part of the funding model, the government will allocate Ksh1.4 billion towards the implementation of the project.

According to the department under the Ministry of Lands, the primary focus of the project will be the development of infrastructure in urban centres throughout the country, as well as sanitation and solid waste management.

“The government intends to use a portion of the proceeds to pay for goods, works, non-consulting services, and consulting services procured for this project.”

The notice stated in part, “Some of the project components include urban development national policies, capacity building, and program management, and they will support implementation at the national level by directly financing activities that contribute to the delivery of Program results.”

In contrast, the government also specified that the program will focus on infrastructure development in refugee camps.

The government submitted its proposal to the World Bank on June 15, based on GossipA2Z-obtained project details.

The funding will be disbursed in installments until June 30, 2028, pending approval.

In 2017, President Uhuru Kenyatta unveiled the Kenya Urban Support Programme (KUSP) to develop the country’s major cities and towns.

Projects were initiated in Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, Nakuru, and Eldoret during the initial phase.

The initial project received Ksh42 billion in funding from Kenya.
