Gachagua’s Shocking U-Turn: Ex-DP Begs Raila for 2027 Power Deal
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has expressed his willingness to join forces with veteran opposition leader Raila Odinga in forming the next government.
Speaking during an interview with Kamba community radio stations, Gachagua made it clear that he has not shut the door on working with Odinga, especially now that Odinga has recently allied with President William Ruto to create a more inclusive government.
Gachagua noted that if young people, particularly Gen Z voters, who currently do not support Ruto, come out in large numbers to vote, they could defeat himโeven with Odinga on his side. He stated that Odinga would have to decide where he stands. If he chooses to support the people, then they can sit down, talk, and come to an agreement.
However, if Odinga prefers to align himself with Ruto, whom Gachagua claims has lost public support, then that would be his choice. Gachagua emphasized that he and his team already have a plan and are listening to the voices of Kenyans.
At the same time, Gachagua clarified that his willingness to work with Odinga does not come with conditions. Odinga is free to choose which side of history he wants to be on. If he decides to support the President and what Gachagua describes as unfair policies, that would be his own decision.

Gachagua stated that whether or not Odinga joins them, they are prepared to challenge Ruto and bring change to the country. He added that if Odinga chooses to work with the “oppressors,” then that will be part of his legacy. However, if he is open to discussions, they can explore how he can contribute to what Gachagua describes as the liberation of the country.
While Gachagua has also shown openness to forming a coalition with former Vice President and Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, he dismissed concerns that Odingaโs alliance with Ruto would weaken his own chances.
Odinga, after failing to secure the African Union Commission chairperson position, has hinted at the possibility of working with the government. During a press briefing at State House in Mombasa, he assured his supporters that he would reveal his next political steps after consulting with various stakeholders.
Following his meeting with President Ruto in Mombasa, Odinga traveled to Kisumu, where he met with leaders of his Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party, including interim party leader Anyangโ Nyongโo and other grassroots politicians.
Meanwhile, Gachagua urged the Kamba community to stand with him and Kalonzo in the 2027 elections to take control of the country’s leadership. He also shared his ambition to use his political influence to secure key elective seats, including the governorships of Nairobi and Mombasa counties.
