Gachagua: Unity Can’t Be Forced from Above, I am Using the Bottom Up Approach Amid UDA Rift

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is advocating for unity in the Mt Kenya region amidst growing divisions within the ruling party and the Kenya Kwanza government.

At the launch of Bahati’s Empire Reality Show on June 7, Gachagua emphasized the importance of uniting individual communities to achieve national unity.

He clarified that his approach aligns with the bottom-up strategy promoted by the President and his team during the 2022 election campaign.

Gachagua highlighted the unique challenges facing the region, underscoring the necessity of addressing these specific issues.

“I am dedicated to uniting my community as a step towards national unity. As the saying goes, charity begins at home. Uniting Kenya requires a bottom-up approach,” Gachagua remarked.

He asserted that unity cannot be achieved top-down. While the bottom-up strategy is being applied to economic efforts, it is also essential for national unity.

Gachagua committed to continuing his efforts for regional unity despite accusations of tribalism.

“Everyone originates from a specific place. People who share a language have distinct concerns. They must discuss these issues among themselves before engaging in broader national conversations,” he elaborated.

Recently, Gachagua faced criticism from some UDA party leaders, including President William Ruto.

Although Ruto and his allies have not directly named Gachagua, they have indicated that the focus should be on national unity rather than regional unity.

Ruto also encouraged MPs to engage with the entire country, addressing concerns that some Rift Valley MPs were trying to influence leadership changes in Mt Kenya.

“I’ve extensive political experience and recognize the risks of tribal politics. I urge government leaders to avoid divisive tribal politics,” Ruto stated during a church service in Bungoma County.

“I appeal to all leaders to channel their efforts towards the transformation of our country rather than dividing Kenyans along tribal lines.”

Following criticism of the Bungoma service, Gachagua challenged leaders from Mt Kenya to oppose his unity efforts within their region.
