Gachagua Throws Shade at William Ruto as He Responds to Graft Allegations: “Betrayal, Conmanship”

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has subtly criticized President William Ruto amid the mounting efforts by Members of Parliament to impeach him.

Speaking in a televised press briefing on Monday, October 7, Gachagua expressed his disappointment, describing the ongoing push as an act of betrayal.

The deputy president suggested that it seemed a decision had been made within the Kenya Kwanza administration that he was no longer of value.

Gachagua insinuated that President Ruto only needed him for a particular purpose โ€” to fight against the influence of former President Uhuru Kenyatta and to lead the Kenya Kwanza Coalition to victory over the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party during the 2022 general elections. Now that the election had been won, he claimed that his role was considered redundant.

Gachagua implied that after having successfully fulfilled his role in helping Ruto ascend to power, he is now being sidelined. He stated that Ruto no longer finds him useful and that this realization is evident from the accusations that are being leveled against him.

Gachagua referred to the allegations as “nonsensical,” asserting that they were nothing more than an excuse to push him out of the government.

The deputy president suggested that he is now perceived as a “spent cartridge” โ€” a metaphor used to convey that he had served his purpose and was no longer needed.

He further alleged that there were plans to replace him with someone else, disregarding the choices made by Kenyan citizens in the last election.

Gachagua characterized these actions as acts of “political deceit, conmanship, and betrayal.”

He emphasized that the betrayal comes from the same individuals with whom he had fought to secure victory in the 2022 elections, making the situation even more disheartening.

In his statement, Gachagua seemed to be directly calling out President Ruto for abandoning their partnership, which had initially been instrumental in their political ascent.

He spoke of his contributions to the Kenya Kwanza campaign, highlighting his role in challenging the influence of the then-government led by former President Kenyatta.

He expressed a sense of being used as a pawn for political gains and then discarded once his utility had expired.

This situation highlights a growing rift within the Kenya Kwanza administration. The deputy president’s remarks suggest an underlying tension between him and President Ruto, with Gachagua feeling let down by the very government he helped bring to power. He lamented how the political promises and solidarity that existed during the campaign period had seemingly evaporated after they took office.

Gachagua’s statement also alluded to the precarious nature of political alliances and the vulnerability that comes with depending on others for political survival.

By using terms like “political deceit” and “betrayal,” he portrayed the current political scenario as one that is fraught with dishonesty and disloyalty.

His remarks were also a subtle warning about the unpredictability of political alliances, where individuals can quickly become dispensable once their role in a given mission has been fulfilled.

In essence, Gachagua’s criticism of the impeachment efforts points to deeper issues within the government, signaling potential discord at the highest levels of the administration.

His remarks serve as a public acknowledgment of a possible fracture in the alliance that once worked together against common political adversaries, suggesting that political allegiances are easily forsaken when convenience dictates.
