Gachagua Rubbishes ‘Childish’ Succession Politics, Tells ‘Confused’ Mt. Kenya Leaders To Focus On Service Delivery
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has warned elected leaders from the Mt. Kenya region about involving themselves in succession politics just a year and a half after the Kenya Kwanza administration assumed leadership at State House. He criticizes this political maneuvering as immature.
Addressing Nyandarua MCAs on Tuesday in Karen, Deputy President Gachagua underscored the significance of elected officials prioritizing the delivery of services over engaging in succession politics. He reiterated that those holding positions should concentrate on fulfilling their duties to the public.
The DP additionally expressed the importance of elected officials actively working to empower the youth at the local level, ultimately broadening their support base for future elections.
“Those who want to lead, hawa vijana wakikufa mtaongoza nani? Kam kwanza tuokoe generation. Then unaeza jipanga nao huko mbele. If these young people wamepoteza vitambulisho, wanalala kwa mtaro…wewe unataka kuongoza…utaongoza nani? There will be nobody to lead,” said Gachagua.
“Let us not be transfixed with childish politics of succession. We have barely come from elections…one and a half years…people want service…kuhudumiwa, kujua mambo ya barabara, ukulima, stima, maziwa. Sasa mambo ya uchaguzi ni ya nini? Tuwachane na hiyo maneno, I want to appeal to everybody and more so in our region where people look a little bit confused.”
Following that, the DP gathered elected officials, encouraging them to put aside their disagreements and collaborate for the overall welfare of the Kenyan people.

“Let us focus on service delivery and we want this region to be united under President William Ruto the way tulikubaliana, tuunge yeye mkono, tuwache mambo mingi na tufanyie wakenya kazi,” he said.
Gachagua expressed his feelings following various groups of leaders from the Mt. Kenya region initiating efforts to replace him as Deputy President Ruto’s running mate in the upcoming General Election.
They criticize the DP for not tackling regional issues, such as neglecting to implement essential reforms in the coffee and tea industries.
They additionally claim that the Development Party (DP) has not succeeded in bringing together the Mt. Kenya region and should make room for new leadership.
One faction advocates for the substitution of Kiharu Member of Parliament Ndindi Nyoro in his place, while another group has recently introduced the name of Interior Cabinet Secretary Prof. Kithure Kindiki as a potential replacement.
DP Gachagua has affirmed that he remains undeterred by the calls for substitution and is determined to stay focused.
“Let me say for the avoidance of doubt, I have only one focus as Gachagua, I am focused on one thing; assisting President William Ruto to succeed…hii ingine wengine wanafuata mambo mengine, mimi siko hapo…hata mpige kelele gani,” he stated last week.
The current discussion on the succession of the deputy president is a noteworthy political conversation, marking the first of its kind involving an incumbent second-in-command since the dramatic removal of Vice President Josephat Karanja in 1989, which also resulted from a regionally supported initiative.
