Gachagua Reveals Ruto’s Withdrawal from Bipartisan Talks

Sunday, April 30th, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua disclosed that President William Ruto terminated bipartisan talks.

During the 25th anniversary celebrations for musician Muigai wa Njoroge in Thika, Kiambu County, the DP revealed that Ruto had a change of heart after sensing a lack of goodwill from the opposition.

Gachagua revealed that Azimio lacked integrity because its leaders attempted to hold simultaneous talks and demonstrations.

“Our representatives can only engage their Azimio counterparts in bipartisan parliamentary discussions when there are no protests.”

We instructed our Members of Parliament, led by the Majority Leader of the National Assembly, Kimani Ichung’wah, that there should be no negotiations as long as Azimio continues to hold protests.

“Either a parliamentary process or demonstrations will suffice. You cannot have both,” the DP explained as the reason why the bipartisan talks failed.

While the DP took a firm stance against simultaneous demonstrations and bipartisan talks, he disagreed with the police department that Azimio should not hold demonstrations in the capital.

“You may participate in demonstrations on Tuesday and make as much noise as you like, but there should be no destruction of other Kenyans’ property,” he added.

Previously, Nairobi Police Chief Adamson Bungei had prohibited Azimio from holding mass demonstrations on May 2.

Bungei stated, “Previous demonstrations were nothing but peaceful; therefore, we are refusing to allow Azimio to proceed.”

Raila Odinga, leader of the Azimio, stated in a statement that the planned demonstrations would continue despite the police directive.

“We will exercise our right to assemble, demonstrate, picket, and present petitions on Tuesday, May 2, 2023, as previously announced, despite ominous threats,” read a portion of a statement dated April 30.

Unlike previous protests, Raila revealed that protests on Tuesday, May 2 would involve a march through the Central Business District (CBD).

During the protests, the coalition will present its complaints to the Office of the President, The National Treasury, the Public Service Commission, and the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission.
