Gachagua Hits Out at Govt After Detaining & Grilling 2 UDA MPs

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on Sunday condemned the government’s alleged use of security forces to intimidate elected officials with opposing views.

Speaking at ACK St. Patrick’s Church in Kayole, Gachagua expressed concern over the rising involvement of security officers in political affairs, calling it a step backward and a threat to democratic principles.

“I urge the security personnel from the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) to avoid taking us back to the past. Using the criminal justice system to control politics is what made the previous administration unpopular,” he said.

Citing the case of Embakasi Central MP Benjamin Gathiru and Embakasi North MP James Gakuya, both questioned by DCI officers, Gachagua called for police to adhere strictly to constitutional guidelines.

“Thereโ€™s no justification for harassing Gakuya and Gathiru over political matters, arresting them, seizing their phones, and intimidating them,” he added.

He urged the DCI to return the phones confiscated from the two MPs during their investigation.

Gachagua argued that attempts to intimidate elected leaders only strengthen their resolve and weaken the government’s reputation.

In a veiled criticism of his administration, Gachagua pointed out that harassment tends to increase the popularity of government critics. “Intimidation of elected officials backfiresโ€”it only makes them more popular,” he remarked.

He also urged police officers to maintain professionalism and uphold ethical standards in their duties.

“I call on our investigative bodies to act professionally and address crime strictly according to the law,” Gachagua stated.

The DP emphasized that officers should operate within the framework of the Kenyan Constitution, penal code, criminal procedure court, and evidence act, without allowing political agendas to influence their work.

“Stop targeting elected leaders for political purposes; focus on your job. We have enough real crime issues to handle in Nairobi City.”
