Gachagua Fires Back at Ichung’wah Over Village Roots Comments

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on Wednesday, July 12, addressed for the first time claims by National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah that leadership does not require village indulgence.

During the opening of the Pharmaceutical Society of Kenya International Scientific Conference in Mombasa, Gachagua expressed his amusement at being criticized for his village roots.

Embracing his background, he mentioned that after the conference, he would briefly travel to Nairobi before heading to his village.

He emphasized that everyone has a place they come from and a home, noting that cities like Nairobi and Mombasa are where people come to earn a living.

Gachagua questioned why anyone would have an issue with people’s origins.

He encouraged Kenyans to take pride in their heritage and not feel ashamed of it.

Furthermore, he urged leaders to stop disrespecting other politicians by calling them villagers.

On June 6, Ichung’wah stated that building a kingdom was impossible with someone who sought village attention.

The Deputy President declared that he would continue to speak Swahili or English in Nyeri County, asserting that using vernacular showed respect for one’s roots.

On Tuesday, Ichung’wah implied that Gachagua’s connection to the Mt Kenya region was a strategy to manipulate President William Ruto.

Ichung’wah stated that neither President Ruto nor the government would succumb to blackmail, regardless of sympathy-seeking photos, vernacular station campaigns, or social media efforts.

Ichung’wah’s remarks followed the circulation of a viral photo showing DP Gachagua flying to Mombasa on the national carrier.
