Gachagua Allies Warn Ruto Over Raila ‘Infiltration’

Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga and Laikipia Governor Joshua Irungu have advised President William Ruto to be cautious about forming close associations with Raila Odinga, the leader of the Azimio alliance.

Addressing attendees at a funeral service in Gitero, Nyeri, Kahiga voiced concerns about the possibility of Raila seamlessly integrating into the government. These apprehensions arose after the Head of State convened with Raila at a livestock enterprise owned by Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni in Kisozi, situated in the Central region of the adjacent country.

โ€œHe must be careful. We have seen in the past Raila utilising such an opportunity to infiltrate the Moi, Kibaki, and Uhuru governments and wrecking the boat from within,โ€ Kahiga claimed.

Kahiga, while referencing the agreement between ex-president Uhuru Kenyatta and Odinga, warned that Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua could face a similar outcome unless Ruto proceeds with caution.

โ€œIn the past, we have seen how the then deputy and now president William Ruto was treated when Raila was accommodated in Uhuruโ€™s administration. We would not like a similar scenario to happen to our son,โ€ he added.

According to Joshua Irungu, the opposition leader is deemed untrustworthy and characterized as cunning from his perspective.

โ€œRuto should deal with Odinga in a situation where one has to sleep with one eye closed while the other open since he can start something fishy anytime,โ€ Joshua Irungu stated.

In November of the previous year, a group of United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party members, under the leadership of Kahiga, expressed disagreement with the establishment of an extra deputy party leader role.

This occurred following rumors suggesting that the party might create an additional deputy role, currently occupied by Rigathi Gachagua. During this period, the governing party aimed to promote a broader national perspective by including influential figures from various regions in preparation for the 2027 elections.

โ€œThere must be a Party leader and a Deputy Party Leader, the rest can be whatever they want, and we are demanding that as members of the UDA party,โ€ Governor Kahiga charged at the time.

โ€œWe have one party leader, and so importantly is to have one deputy party leader.โ€

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has positioned himself as a potential successor to President William Ruto. Consequently, any alliances or agreements between the Azimio leader and the current head of state are perceived as a challenge to Gachagua’s aspirations.
