Fuel Crisis Looms in Kenya: Gladys Shollei Sounds the Alarm

Sunday, July 9th, Uasin Gishu Woman Representative Gladys Shollei warned Kenyans of an impending fuel shortage.

The parliamentarian, who also serves as vice-speaker of the National Assembly, addressed the press following a medical retreat in her county.

Shollei remarked that the fuel crisis would result from the High Court’s judgment to suspend the implementation of the Finance Act 2023.
She criticized the High Court’s ruling, observing that it deprived the government of desperately needed revenue.

“The argument that must be presented to the court is crystal plain. If this Finance Act 2023 is not implemented, will irreparable injury and damage be caused to the economy of this nation?

If the courts do not lift the suspension of the Act’s implementation, she warned, “Soon there will be no gas for your cars.”

If the moratorium continues, the country is on the verge of defaulting on its loans, Shollei warned.

In addition, she cautioned that President William Ruto would be forced to implement austerity measures to circumvent the financial crunch.

In an interview with GossipA2Z, economist Fred Ogolla expressed concern regarding Kenya’s ability to pay its debts.

“The government will soon be unable to pay foreign oil importers, which will be detrimental to the economy,” he said.

The High Court issued conservatory orders suspending the implementation of the Finance Act of 2023 on Friday, June 30.

Judge Mugure Thande stated that the suspension will remain in effect until a case filed by Senator Okiya Omtatah of Busia is heard and decided.

Omtatah had filed a petition claiming that the Finance Act violated his rights to equality, property, and an impartial hearing.
