For many immigrants, the proverbial American dream remains a metaphor. However, a Kenyan immigrant made this dream a reality due to his zeal, patience, and passion.

In search of greener pastures, George Mbugua moved to the United States. Several years later, Mbugua is a wealthy Respiratory Therapist Director in Texas, United States.

Mbugua, who was born and raised in Kiambu County, moved to Seattle, Washington, where the majority of his family had settled. However, to make ends meet before moving to Kansas, he cleaned toilets.

“I knew from the beginning that I wanted a good life, a good education, and a positive impact on my children back home,” he told Mkenya Marekani TV.

However, the University of Kansas denied Mbugua’s application to study nursing because he lacked the necessary Green Card documents.

“Therefore, I informed the director that I had taken Anatomy and Physiology, Mathematics, and Statistics. I have all my pre-requisite.

“He permitted me to enroll in a Respiratory Therapy course because a program was scheduled to begin a few months later. I submitted my paperwork 15 years ago, and here I am today. It was the best decision I’ve ever made,” he said.

During his second year at the University of Kansas, Mbugua secured two three-day-per-week jobs.

In addition to earning his master’s degree during the pandemic, he began his doctoral studies at the University of Cumberlands in Kentucky several months later.

In addition to his primary responsibilities, Mbugua moderates events where he interacts with influential individuals.

“I have conducted interviews with politicians and organization leaders. My responsibility is to demonstrate how Kenyans in the Diaspora are making an impact, he said.

The average salary of a director of respiratory therapy ranges from Ksh14 million and up.
