“From Missing to Messy: Juja MP Koimburi Accused of Orchestrating Own Disappearance”
Juja Member of Parliament George Koimburi is in serious trouble after the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) announced that he allegedly staged his own kidnapping.
On Wednesday, May 28, Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, together with top police officials including DCI Director Amin Mohammed, told the media that three people have been arrested in connection with the incident. One of the suspects is the Juja Constituency Development Fund (CDF) chairperson, who is believed to have helped plan the fake abduction.
According to statements given by the suspects, authorities now believe that Koimburiโs disappearance and claims of torture were completely staged.
The consequences could be severe. Koimburi may lose his personal freedom, public trust, financial standing, and possibly his seat in Parliament.
Legal experts say the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) could press charges once the DCI completes its investigation. If thereโs enough evidence, Koimburi could be charged with giving false information to the police, obstructing justice, and misusing public resources.
The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) may also step in. If Koimburi is found guilty of misleading the public or abusing his position, the EACC can investigate further and suggest disciplinary action based on Chapter 6 of the Kenyan Constitution, which promotes leadership and integrity.
Although the EACC cannot directly remove a Member of Parliament, it can submit its findings to the ODPP. If Koimburi is considered unfit to serve, legal proceedings may begin in court.

In Parliament, the Powers and Privileges Committee, led by Speaker Moses Wetangโula, has the authority to deal with cases of misconduct by MPs. If the committee finds that Koimburiโs actions have harmed the reputation of Parliament, they can investigate, summon him for questioning, and recommend disciplinary measures such as suspension, formal warning, or further investigation.
Beyond these formal actions, Koimburi could also face backlash from his voters. Under the Constitution, Juja residents have the right to recall their MP if they believe he has committed gross misconduct or violated leadership and integrity standards.
To start a recall process, a resident must file a petition with the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) along with signatures from at least 30% of registered voters in the constituency.
If the IEBC accepts the petition, a recall vote will be held. If most voters support the recall, Koimburi would be removed from office and a new election would be scheduled.
