Angry residents of Kaminji village in Mwea-West, Kirinyaga County arrested four suspected donkey thieves on Friday morning and set one of their vehicles on fire.

Kirwarwa Sub-location Assistant Chief Zacharia Miano Muchiri reported that villagers managed to capture four of the suspected donkey thieves, although three managed to escape after being caught slaughtering 30 donkeys near River Sagana.

“Some suspects were found loading meat into two vehicles: a Pajero and a Probox. The Probox was set on fire before we could intervene, as the villagers were about to set the Pajero on fire,” the Assistant Chief stated.

Police had a difficult time stopping the mob from lynching the suspects. The situation was calmed when one suspect, Ndirangu, revealed that they sold the stolen donkey meat at Bama Market in Nairobi, providing details about their operation to save their lives.

Ndirangu confessed, “Please don’t kill us. We will tell you everything. We sell the donkey meat at Burma Market and pay those who slaughter Ksh 10,000 after the business ends.”

James Maina, the person in charge of Kirwara village, emphasized the gravity of the crime by noting that a colt was found among the slaughtered donkeys, showing that one of the animals had been pregnant.

Samuel Magu Kariuki, a villager, shared his shock at the scene, explaining how he initially planned to shoot one of the drivers with a bow and arrow before the suspect surrendered. “We first arrested two suspects and later captured two more. We are still searching for the remaining three suspects,” Kariuki said.

Residents are alarmed by the increasing livestock thefts in the area. Stephen Mwaura Karanja expressed the community’s frustration and their hope that this incident would discourage future thefts.
