Four individuals are believed to be trapped under the debris after a five-story building collapsed on Tuesday night in Nairobi’s Mountain View Ward.

The building is situated on Naivasha Road, near the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI).

Kenya Red Cross first responders and Nairobi City county firefighters are working together on the rescue operations.

The Red Cross reported that its Action Team rescued and treated 10 people with minor injuries at the scene.

According to Bramwell Simiyu, chief officer of Nairobi County disaster management, all families have been accounted for except four people as of 10 pm.

“The four missing persons include a nanny and two children from one household, and a 10-year-old girl from another home. The girl’s father arrived at the scene and informed the responders that she was home alone,” stated Simiyu.

Simiyu added that rescue efforts are ongoing and that the Nairobi City County Government has deployed specialized equipment.

The cause of the collapse is unknown, and detailed investigations will begin on Wednesday.

“Further updates will be shared as they become available,” Simiyu mentioned.

Images and videos viewed by The Star showed the building leaning to one side.

A witness stated that people were inside their apartments when the building collapsed.

She claimed the landlord was conducting expansion work, and ongoing heavy rains may have weakened the soil foundation, causing the collapse.

The first floor of the building seemed to be the most damaged.

She also noted that parked cars were damaged.

“We’ve been told not to enter. We heard people screaming and some tried to evacuate while those on the first floor are still missing,” she stated.
