Former Mungiki Chief, 2 Others, Face Weapons Possession Charges

After spending several days in detention, former Mungiki Leader Maina Njenga was brought before the Makadara courts today.

They were arrested after various items, including Maasai rungus, bows, and arrows, were discovered in their possession. His brother, Peter Kamunya, and the guard Felix Lakishe were also arrested.

On the charge sheet, it was written that on July 20, 2023, in Kiserian within Kajiado, the three were found to have offensive weapons without a legitimate explanation. The weapons that were found were 14 machetes, 24 Maasai swords, 46 rungus, and three jembe sticks.

Some of the weapons the police claimed were found on Njenga.

According to the accusation sheet, the circumstances gave rise to a reasonable assumption that the aforementioned offensive weapons were intended to be used in a manner that would be detrimental to public order.

In addition to that, they were charged with planning an unlawful gathering as well as preparing to commit a criminal.

On the other hand, they have refuted the allegations.

The clients’ attorneys are pleading their case to have them released from custody.

The previous head of the Mungiki was taken into custody by the police on Wednesday.
According to his lawyer, Ndegwa Njiru, he was arrested while he was in Lower Matasia in Ngong and transferred to a location that has not been made public.

It was almost eight o’clock in the evening when officers in unmarked cars arrived at the residence of his father and arrested him, according to the family.

The group informed him that they intended to question him on the ongoing demonstrations against the government in the country.
