Former Kakamega Governor Oparanya Freed After Intense Two-Hour Interrogation
Wycliffe Oparanya, the former governor of Kakamega, was detained by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Kakamega on his way from Kisumu to Bungoma when he was released.
Oparanya, who was interrogated for approximately two hours at the Kakamega police headquarters before being released, claims that DCI detectives forced him to record a statement for causing disorder and property damage during Wednesday’s anti-government demonstrations in Busia.
“I was invited to supper by a friend from Bungoma. After his release, Oparanya told the press that his vehicle was ambushed by three automobiles whose occupants were armed as he approached the location.
“They all had their weapons trained on me. They then forcibly removed my chauffeur from the vehicle, which they subsequently seized. One of them stated that he was a CID officer and that I would be questioned.

Oparanya claims he was accused of using a state-issued vehicle during the alleged incident, and he declined to record the statement. His attorney, Echesa, acted on his behalf.
The former governor added that the DCI agents failed to explain his arrest.
“My client was detained as though he were a terrorist. The regional director of the DCI has failed to explain why my client was detained. They have even impounded Oparanya’s vehicle; we have given them 24 hours to return it, as he is entitled to it, said Oparanya’s attorney, Echesa.
“We will sue the DCI for harassing, intimidating, and violating my client’s rights if they do not comply with our request.”
