Former GSU Officer Apprehended in Bank Robbery

On Tuesday, July 11, agents from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) arrested a former General Service Unit (GSU) officer believed to have orchestrated a bank burglary two years ago.

The DCI disclosed in a statement that the former police officer was responsible for a daring daylight bank robbery in Matuu in July 2021.

In the most recent case, the former GSU officer is accused of perpetrating nine violent robberies in various regions of the country.

“The former police officer became especially apparent in the bank robbery incident when his gang of five robbed the bank and fled with two disarmed AK-47 rifles from the officers guarding it,” a DCI statement read in part.

The agency indicated that its detectives pursued the case for two years, during which time the suspect’s gang was neutralized.

Before the ex-GSU officer was apprehended, one of the stolen rifles was recovered and several arrests were made.

When his accomplices were apprehended or killed in a police shootout, the mastermind retreated into the shadows, making it difficult for the detectives to track him down.

However, they did not abandon the investigation, and on July 11, they recovered the second rifle in the Takaungu region of Kilifi County.
During the Takaungu operation, the officers learned that the ex-police officer was hidden in Gilgil.

“Preliminary investigations have linked him to nine reported robberies in the counties of Mombasa, Kwale, Kilifi, and Machakos.

“Detectives are advancing their investigations to apprehend more accomplices as the suspect is being processed for arraignment,” disclosed the DCI.

In July 2021, at 9:00 a.m., the thugs attacked the bank, injuring two guarding police officers and stealing an undetermined quantity of cash from tellers and customers present.
