Former Embu North DCIO Jerevasio Njeru Sentenced To 30 Years In Prison For Rape

In a groundbreaking verdict, Jervasio Mwaniki Nyaga, previously the Embu North Sub-County DCIO, has been handed a hefty 30-year prison sentence after being found guilty on counts of rape and abuse of authority.ย

The court delivered a 20-year jail term for two instances of rape and an additional 10 years for abusing his position of power.

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) revealed that despite an initial acquittal by the trial court, an appellate court overturned the decision, emphasizing that the prosecution presented overwhelming evidence against the accused.

Mwaniki’s charges stemmed from an incident on May 31, 2020, where he was accused of raping a 42-year-old woman at Manyatta Police Station.

The court stressed that DNA evidence indisputably linked the former officer to the crime, highlighting a miscarriage of justice in his initial acquittal.

The judge remarked that Mwaniki exploited his authoritative position, coercing the complainant into his office and sexually assaulting her, banking on her subordinate status to prevent her from reporting the assault.

This landmark ruling underscores the importance of upholding justice and accountability, signaling a firm stance against abuse of power and violence against women within law enforcement.
