When Merilyn Miller arrived in Kenya in 2019 for her missionary endeavors, she never anticipated encountering the person she would fall deeply in love with amidst the bustling streets of Nairobi.

A philanthropic endeavor evolved into a romantic relationship, ultimately culminating in marriage.

In an interview with Afrimax English, the couple recounted the origins of Miller and Elvis Aluzimbi’s romantic journey.

    Humble background

Raised in Western Kenya, Aluzimbi spent his formative years amid poverty, facing economic struggles alongside his family. Seeking better prospects for a more comfortable life, he decided to move to Nairobi in pursuit of employment opportunities.

However, things took a turn for the worse when he couldn’t secure any job opportunities. As his disappointment intensified, Aluzimbi turned to drugs and alcohol as a means of coping.

In 2015, Aluzimbi committed to embracing Christianity and reforming his lifestyle. Shortly after, he secured various temporary jobs, such as construction work, to support himself.

In his pursuit of improving his financial situation, he opted to volunteer his culinary skills at a nearby business as part of his mission to assist those in need. He mentioned that occasionally he would receive a modest payment for his dedicated efforts.

    Meeting Merilyn

In 2019, Aluzimbi commenced his workday as usual, but this time he encountered Merilyn Miller, originally from Ohio, USA.

They quickly connected due to their shared enthusiasm for missionary endeavors, which evolved into a close personal relationship beyond their professional duties.

“I found him working in the organization as a chef. We were conversing as friends. I would help him in cooking,” Miller stated.

“The thing that attracted me to her is that she used to assist me in the kitchen. I thought she would make a good wife. We began meeting at social events,” Aluzimbi remarked.

Even while juggling daytime casual labor and nighttime volunteer commitments, Aluzimbi dreamed of beginning a family with Miller.

“One day while heading for missionary work, I decided to propose to her inside a bus, and she said yes,” he noted.

After learning the news, Miller returned to the United States to notify her family of the decision. However, the reception varied among family members due to their diverse cultural backgrounds.

Nevertheless, Miller disregarded the family’s perspective and chose to move to Kenya, intending to spend the remainder of her life with her fiancรฉ.

In October 2021, she chose to liquidate her possessions, including a Jeep, to travel to Nairobi. Two months later, the pair tied the knot.
