Foreign Powers Issue Warning to Ruto & Raila

Tuesday, July 18th, ambassadors and high commissioners offered their support for mediation talks between President William Ruto and Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga regarding the scheduled nationwide protests.

In a joint statement, the diplomats urged the two leaders to engage in dialogue to prevent additional deaths.

They expressed regret over the destruction of property and loss of life that occurred during the Azimio la Umoja protests in recent weeks.

“We are saddened by the loss of life and concerned by the high levels of violence, including the use of live rounds and the destruction of property, during the recent demonstrations,” the statement read in part.

“We recognize the daily hardships endured by many Kenyans and urge all parties to voice their concerns through meaningful dialogue and resolve their differences peacefully so that the nation can be built together without further loss of life.”

Among the 13 embassies that signed the letter were those of Germany, Canada, the United States, Norway, Ukraine, and the United Kingdom.

During a press briefing on Tuesday at noon, Azimio stated that the protests would continue despite duress from the government and religious leaders.

“Despite the withdrawal of security, Azimio confirms that the protests scheduled for Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday of this week will occur as previously announced,”

“The use of force was completely disproportionate and unnecessary. Part of Azimio’s statement read, “We have always urged our protesters to remain peaceful, and we urge them to continue doing so.”

Earlier media reports claimed that Suna East MP Junet Mohamed and Professor Makau Mutua were among those representing the opposition during secret discussions between Raila and Ruto.

Martha Karua, the leader of Narc Kenya, downplayed the reports.

She indicated that engagement with the government was limited to bipartisan discussions.
