Fire Breaks Out At Furniture Shop Along Thika Road

A fire razed down property at a furniture shop in the Carwash Area of Kasarani along Thika Road on Friday, December 8.

Eyewitnesses stated that the fire broke out around noon, destroying property of unknown value

Area residents rushed to the aid of the furniture shop owners before firefighters from Nairobi County arrived to curb the furnace.

In videos that were circulated widely, the firefighters were seen spraying water on the furnace to prevent it from spreading further and destroying other business premises.

Emergency service providers were also deployed to attend to any victims of the fire. No casualties had been recorded by the time of publishing this article.

The cause of the accident was also yet to be established. It was also unclear whether police had visited the area to record statements and launch investigations into the midday fire.

Carwash has been plagued by a tragic few incidents in the past few years, with the recent being the collapsing of a building that claimed three lives.

Another building sank in the area in August 2023 at around 1 am. However, no one was injured in this incident.

In the past, the Nairobi County Fire Department has been criticized for its slow response to disasters in the county, with a few incidents reported in the Gikomba market where traders lost huge amounts of property.

However, Governor Sakaja, in July 2023, allocated Ksh165 million to the city fire department to enhance its emergency service operations. Ksh120 million was to be used to construct fire stations in Gikomba, Kangemi, and Clay City, with Ksh25 million used to upgrade the Kangundo Road fire station.

The Nairobi Disaster Response reportedly has 16 operational fire engines distributed throughout various stations within the county.
