Fatal Incident in Kilifi Cult: Follower’s Death, Two Critical in Hospital

One of the suspected cult leader Paul Mackenzie’s followers in Kilifi has died, and two others are in critical condition in the hospital.

The State informed the court that Joseph Juma Buyuka passed away while receiving medical care at the Malindi hospital.

“We suspect that the decedent died of complications related to a hunger strike. We cannot determine the cause of death without a post-mortem, said Senior Prosecutor Jami Yamina.

The prosecutor stated that the state is awaiting the report before presenting it as evidence in court. As the suspects are being held in custody per court order.

Buyuka was one of thirty Mackenzie followers transferred to prison after engaging in a hunger strike while in police custody.

After his health deteriorated, the deceased was transported from Malindi GK prison to the Malindi Hospital. Where he died while receiving treatment.

Mr. Yamina also informed Senior Principal Magistrate Yussuf Shikanda in Shanzu that two additional suspects, Evans Kolombe Sirya and Frederick Karimi, have been admitted to the hospital in critical condition.

Due to complications associated with their hunger strike, they are currently on medication.

The prosecutor stated, “The two are currently admitted to the medical facility, and we will provide an update on their health within a week or so.”

The state has asked the court to dispense with the suspects’ court appearances until their health conditions improve.

Mr. Karimi and at least five of his accomplices appeared in court last week emaciated, prompting the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions to request that they be remanded to prison, where they would be subjected to forced feeding.
