Fatal Crash Claims 15 Lives on Nakuru-Eldoret Highway

This morning, on Tuesday, January 9, a collision between a bus and a matatu on the Nakuru-Eldoret highway resulted in the unfortunate passing of 15 individuals.

The NPS reported that the incident took place approximately at 2:45 am in the vicinity of the Twin Bridge area.

As per the authorities, the bus was owned by the Classics Kings of Congo, while the matatu is operated by the North Ways Shuttle Sacco.

Right after the accident happened, law enforcement officers from Mau Summit Police Station were sent to block off the area and ensure no further accidents took place at the site.

The authorities also assisted additional victims, although they had not disclosed the overall count of individuals injured yet.

“The injured were rushed to Molo Sub-County Hospital,” NPS stated in a statement issued today morning.

However, it remained uncertain whether the number of deaths was anticipated to increase. Additionally, the National Park Service (NPS) did not disclose the reason behind the morning accident, nor did they clarify if investigations into the tragedy had begun.

Pictures provided by law enforcement depicted the bus significantly wrecked at the front, displaying a shattered windshield and lights. The absence of its front tires suggested debris strewn across the road, posing a substantial hazard to other drivers.

On the flip side, the matatu became distorted due to the force of the collision’s impact on the front, causing the vehicle to bend or deform.

“The National Police Service is appealing to all motorists to exercise extreme caution on our roads to prevent road crashes,” NPS cautioned motorists to observe traffic laws.

This event took place just 19 hours following a tragic road collision involving a matatu and a lorry at Kisaju along the Isinya/Kitengela road, where three passengers lost their lives. The police reported that the accident happened around 6:40 am.

“Preliminary investigations by officers from Isinya Police Station indicate that the driver of the matatu attempted to overtake the stalled lorry but instead lost control and hit the said Lorry on the rear right.

“Due to the impact, two unknown female and one male adult passengers died on the spot while others were rushed by good Samaritans to various hospitals. Bodies of the deceased were moved to Shalom Hospital Mortuary,” NPS stated.

Data provided by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) reveals that there were 4,139 fatalities due to road accidents from January 1 to December 20, 2023, which is lower than the 4,517 deaths recorded during the same period in 2022.
