Mama Ida Odingaโs Early Life and Career
Mama Ida was born on August 24, 1950, in Migori County to the late Reverend Henry Odhiambo and Mama Rose Otieno. Raised in a Christian home, she developed strong values that shaped her future path.
She attended Ogande Girls High School in Homa Bay before proceeding to the University of Nairobi, where she studied education. It was during her time at the university that she met Raila Odinga, who later became her husband in 1973 and a key figure in Kenyaโs political landscape.

Ida built a distinguished career in education, serving as a teacher and eventually rising to headmistress of the prestigious Kenya High School. However, in 1991 she was controversially dismissed from her position, a move widely believed to have been politically motivated due to Railaโs opposition to the KANU regime.
Her Legacy and Impact
Beyond her teaching career, Mama Ida has been a passionate advocate for womenโs empowerment, education reforms, and health initiatives. She is celebrated not only as the wife of Raila Odinga but also as an influential leader in her own right, whose contributions continue to inspire generations across Kenya.
