Ahmed Hassan Issack, the former Chairperson of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), has been selected as one of just 41 candidates shortlisted for the role of a judge at the Court of Appeal.

Chief Justice Martha Koome, acting as the head of the Judicial Service Commission, announced a reduced list of shortlisted candidates after the commission had received applications from 82 individuals.

Wafula Chebukati, the formerย chairpersonย of the IEBC, applied but was not included in the list of shortlisted candidates.

Former IEBC Chairperson Wafula Chebukati and Chief Justice Martha Koome.

Among those shortlisted are Hassan, alongside justices Chacha Mwita, Athony Murima, Grace Nzioka, James Wakiaga, and Dalmas Omondi.

“The JSCย havingย reviewed the application for completeness and conformity with the requirementsย asย set out in the advertisement, shortlisted 41 candidates,” read the notice in part.

Koome has issued a public notice inviting feedback from the public on the behavior of the selected candidates. Comments should be submitted by May 13, 2024.

The interviews for the selected candidates will begin on June 3 at 9:00 am and end on the afternoon of June 20.

“Take note that the Commission may interview any member of the public who has submitted information on any of the shortlisted candidates and such information shall be kept confidential,” read the notice in part.

The interviews will take place at the Central Bank of Kenya’s Pension Towers on Harambee Avenue.

At the start of February, the Judicial Service Commission announced 11 openings for the role of Court of Appeal Judge, and 41 candidates are competing for these positions.

The application process ended on February 29, and the assessment of the 82 submitted applications began.

Chebukati became the IEBC Chairperson in 2017 and stepped down soon after supervising the 2022 General Election.

Hassanย held the position ofย IEBC Chairperson from November 2011 until October 6, 2016.
