Ex-GSU Officer Breaks Into Police Camp & Steals Guns
A former General Service Unit (GSU) officer was detained on Sunday after two stolen firearms from a police camp were discovered in his possession.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) agents who conducted the operation reported that the suspect had infiltrated the Korngotuny GSU camp in Kopsiro, Bungoma County, and stolen the firearms.
DCI believes that the former GSU officer, who was suspended for disciplinary reasons, infiltrated the compound on the night of August 23.
Subsequently, a search warrant was executed at the suspect’s residence, but he evaded capture by fleeing into a nearby sugarcane plantation.
In the wee hours, the officers conducted a vigorous, hours-long investigation in the vast sugarcane field and located the suspect.
“The G3 rifles one of which was loaded with 20 rounds of 7.62mm caliber disappeared mysteriously from Korngotuny GSU camp, prompting an operation led by sleuths from the elite Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau to recover them,” read the statement in part.

“After conducting comprehensive investigations and analysis, the detectives identified the main suspect behind the disappearance.”
The detectives also noted that the suspect concealed the firearms using techniques he learned while serving with the unit.
“The thug who appeared not to have forgotten his concealment lessons at the paramilitary unit, had utilized the available thick cover of the cane in an attempt to deceive our men, but gave up when the detectives deployed plan B of their operation,” added the statement.
“After being apprehended, he led the officers to the banks of River Sio, which snakes close to his father’s land where the firearms were recovered buried on the ground.”
The DCI has initiated inquiries into the incident.
According to Kenyan law, anyone who steals a firearm with the intent to use it in a crime confronts up to fourteen years in prison.
Theft of ammunition, on the other hand, carries a 10-year prison sentence.
