Ex-GSU Officer Arrested for Allegedly Shooting Wife Amidst Ongoing Controversies
A former General Service Unit (GSU) police officer was apprehended on Tuesday after allegedly shooting and severely injuring his wife at their residence in Ketete, Narok County.
Stephen Kiptanui Soi, who previously held a senior position at the National Olympic Committee, is a licensed firearm holder, according to authorities.
The incident occurred on the morning of August 27, following a heated argument between Soi and his wife, a High Court advocate, resulting in her being shot and wounded.
The victim sustained an injury to her left thigh and was admitted to a local private hospital where she remains in stable condition, as per police reports.
The incident was reported to the Mulot police station, prompting officers to investigate the scene.
Upon arrival, police recovered a spare magazine and another loaded with 12 rounds of ammunition.
Soi had already fled the scene, leading to a brief search for both him and the Ceska pistol used in the shooting.
Authorities later found the weapon in his bedroom, along with a magazine containing six bullets.
A spent cartridge was also retrieved from the scene, officials confirmed.
The firearm was sent for ballistic examination.
Subsequently, police located their former commander and placed him under arrest.
Soi, aged 68, is facing charges of attempted murder.
The exact cause of the domestic dispute remains unclear.

This isn’t Soi’s first controversy.
In 2021, the Milimani Anti-Corruption Court found Soi guilty of multiple counts of abuse of office and failure to comply with public fund management laws, stemming from the 2016 Rio Olympics.
However, in January 2023, the High Court overturned the verdict, declaring Soi innocent after his appeal, with Judge Esther Maina stating that his defense had not been adequately considered in the 2021 trial.
As a former National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOCK) official and the country’s Chef de Mission in Brazil, Soi was initially convicted for authorizing unlawful payments totaling Sh55 million to the Olympic team.
He was fined Sh105 million or faced a 17-year prison sentence.
The original court ruling cited his failure to disclose a double payment to NOCK officials and his authorization of plane ticket cancellations, which led to public fund losses.
Soi defended himself, stating he was unfairly penalized for ticket cancellations despite high-ranking officials not showing up at the airport, many of whom were beyond his authority.
Regarding allowances, Soi argued that it was unreasonable for athletes to be paid Sh20,000 daily when they had received Sh25,000 per day during the 2012 London Olympics. He opted to pay them Sh27,000 per day instead.
Before his dismissal from the police service in 2004, along with 56 other senior officers, little was known about Soi, who then held the rank of Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP).
