Employees to be Compensated 70% of their Salary if Injured During Work
Workers who sustain injuries on the job will receive compensation equivalent to 70 percent of their monthly wages at the moment of the incident.
According to the draft of the 2024 Worker’s Injury Compensation Bill from the Ministry of Labour, it is presently in the phase of seeking public input.
This rule will apply to employees who experience temporary total disability at the time of injury.
“Temporary total disablement means the temporary total inability of the employee to perform the work at which the employee was employed at the time of the accident or at the time of contracting an occupational disease,” the Bill explains.
Per the legislation, the same provision will be implemented if an employee is unable to perform a comparable role to the one they were in when they experienced temporary total disability.
The remuneration will originate from a government-managed Workers Compensation Fund, funded by mandatory contributions from employers.

“Notwithstanding any provision of this Act, the employer in whose service an employee is at the time of the accident shall be liable for the payment of the compensation of the first month from the date of the accident,” it is expounded further.
The employer will subsequently receive reimbursement for the funds disbursed to the employee from the Director General of the Workers Compensation Fund.
If the employer fails to make the necessary payment, they will be considered to have violated the law and could face a penalty of up to one million in fines or a maximum of three years imprisonment upon conviction.
As per the Ministry of Labour, once the Bill becomes law, it will apply to employers across both private and public sectors.
This will encompass individuals employed in cooperatives, clubs, groups, or any other organized association of people, among other possibilities.
“Payment of compensation shall take place in the form of periodical payments at such intervals, not exceeding one month,” it is explained.
