Authorities from Kehancha Police Station in Migori County are currently looking into the killing of a businessperson who was fatally stabbed by a former employee in Isebania on Thursday, February 29.

Describing the sequence of events, a law enforcement official familiar with the situation briefed the media, stating that the individual who passed away commenced his business activities on Thursday morning and proceeded with his usual daily routine.

Shortly after, a former employee, whom he had terminated a week earlier, arrived at his establishment.

The two individuals initially started a discussion which eventually turned into a heated dispute, leading to a confrontational situation.

The law enforcement official revealed that the ex-employee, fueled by anger, wielded a knife and attacked the businessman with two chest stabs. Following the incident, the perpetrator quickly fled the area.

Kehancha Police Station officials were sent to the location and secured the entire business premises as a crime scene. Detectives are currently conducting investigations to establish the motive behind the homicide.

Law enforcement authorities eliminated theft as a possible motive, as the suspect did not take the cash left on the table, which was left undisturbed.

Initial inquiries indicated that the individual escaped in the direction of Tanzania in an attempt to evade detection by law enforcement authorities.

“They began arguing and following the confrontation, the ex-employee took out a knife and stabbed him to death at his chest. He then fled to Tanzania,” the officer stated.

“If the motive were to steal, he would have taken the cash left on the table.”

The occurrence underscores the recent uptick in criminal actions nationwide. As per the Economic Survey 2023 findings from the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS), the incidence of crime rose from 81,272 cases in 2021 to 88,083 cases in 2022.

In 2022, police stations recorded the most incidents, with robberies, homicides, and abductions being the predominant categories.
