Eid-Ul-Adha Declared Public Holiday by Interior CS

Interior CS Kithure Kindiki declared June 28 a public holiday to commemorate Eid al-Adha (Idd al-Azha).

The CS stated in a Special Gazette Notice dated Monday, June 26 that the declaration conforms to the Public Holidays Act.

“It is hereby notified for the general information of the public that in the exercise of the powers conferred by section 2 (2) and part II of the schedule, as read with section 3 of the Public Holidays Act, the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration declares that Wednesday, June 28, 2023, shall be a public holiday to commemorate Eid-Ul-Adha (Idd-ul-Azha),” the statement stated.

The Chief of Defence praised Kindiki for recognizing the holiday and issuing a proclamation.

“My sincere appreciation and gratitude to the Government, via my colleague CS – Interior, Prof Kindiki Kithure, for recognizing and proclaiming June 28, 2023, as a public holiday to commemorate Eid-Ul-Adha,” he said.

By section 3 of the Public Holidays Act, dates determined by the Islamic faith are to be declared public holidays.

According to the Islamic faith, the holiday is known as the Festival of Sacrifice. And it commemorates the devotion of Abraham and Ishmael. The celebration signifies the culmination of the Pilgrimage, the fifth pillar of Islam.

In the Islamic calendar, there are two major celebration festivals: Eid-ul-Fitr, which signifies the end of Ramadan, and Eid-ul-Adha, which follows the conclusion of the annual Hajj pilgrimage.

Following a special Gazette Notice from the Ministry of the Interior, Eid-ul-Fitr was observed on April 21, 2023.

The Islamic culture holds that the Qur’an text was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad during the month of Ramadan.

During the special occasion, believers in various communities share food and other gifts with the less fortunate. In addition, they gather at various places of worship to break the fast.
