Education Ministry Adjusts School Calendar Amid Finance Bill Protests: Half-Term Break Moved Up
Boarding schools have been authorized by the Ministry of Education to release their students for the upcoming half-term break starting Monday, June 24. This adjustment to the academic calendar was made unexpectedly. Initially, the second term’s half-term break was slated to commence on Wednesday, June 26.
In a communication addressed to school principals, the Ministry of Education clarified that this early break aims to provide ample time for students and parents to arrange travel plans ahead of scheduled protests related to the Finance Bill on Tuesday.
Consequently, some principals have notified parents to collect their children starting today; otherwise, they will have to wait until Wednesday.
Students attending day schools will commence their half-term break immediately after the end of the academic day today.

Over the past week, Kenyan citizens, predominantly from the Gen Z demographic, have been actively participating in street protests against the proposed Finance Bill 2024. These demonstrations erupted last Thursday across various cities and towns, including Eldoret, Nanyuki, and Nyeri, among others.
In late May, the Ministry adjusted the half-term dates for the second term to run from June 26 to June 30. In a corresponding memo, Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang attributed this change to the delayed opening caused by recent flooding.
“Due to disruptions in the opening dates, it has been decided to revise the half-term dates for term two 2024,” the memo stated, acknowledging potential adjustments required for planned activities and schedules.
Before the flooding, the original calendar had designated the half-term period as June 20 to June 23. Initially, schools were scheduled to reopen on Monday, April 29, before Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu postponed the dates.
