EACC Steps In After Parliament Exposes Cheating In National Exams

Before this year’s national examinations, the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) will participate on Monday, October 16 in a sensitization forum centered on ethics and integrity.

In a statement, the anti-corruption organization stated that 2023 Examination Monitors and Ministry of Education officials, including Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu and his principal secretaries, will attend the forum organized by the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC).

Additionally, KNEC Council members and senior management are anticipated to attend.

In Nairobi County, the forum will be conducted at the KNEC headquarters on Dennis Pritt Road.

According to the EACC, the awareness campaign will address any systemic flaws and vulnerabilities that undermine the credibility of national examinations.

The EACC’s action comes days after the Education Committee of the National Assembly released a report confirming the existence of exam cheating last year.

A parliamentary committee discovered that the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) had handled 68 cases of exam cheating, 44 of which were still under investigation.

Seventeen cases are currently pending in court, while six have already been prosecuted.

In January 2023, a week after the publication of the 2022 national examination results and in response to public outrage over alleged widespread cheating, the committee launched its investigation.

This decision was made one week before the 2023 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations.

Examinations for the KCSE are scheduled to begin on Monday, October 23, with rehearsals scheduled for Thursday, October 19.

Candidates will take the final examination on Friday, November 24.

The Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) examinations will commence on Monday, October 30, 2023, and conclude on Wednesday, November 1, 2023.
