DPP Drops Ruto Assassination Letter Case: Dennis Itumbi Exonerated

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) has decided to drop the case against Dennis Itumbi. The ICT Chief Administrative Secretary and former State House Digital Strategist. Which he was accused of forging a letter back in 2019.

The letter alleged a plot to assassinate the then Deputy President, William Ruto.

The ODPP explained that there was insufficient evidence to proceed with the prosecution, and they considered the case against Itumbi and Samuel Gateri to be unconstitutional.

The court, in its acquittal of Itumbi and Gateri, criticized the entire process of prosecuting them, stating that it violated the constitution.

Itumbi faced three charges, namely, making a false document, publishing a false statement, and reprogramming his mobile phone. However, he denied all the allegations brought against him.

The forged letter that was at the center of the case claimed that a group of high-ranking government officials within former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration had convened a meeting at La Mada Hotel, located off Thika Road in Nairobi, to strategize the alleged assassination plot against Ruto.

Itumbi was subsequently arrested and charged based on his alleged involvement with the letter, which was found to have been shared in a WhatsApp Group called Tanga Tanga movement.

In light of the withdrawal of the case by the ODPP, Itumbi, and Gateri. can now be considered free of the accusations brought against them.

The decision to drop the charges signifies the lack of substantial evidence. To support the allegations and casts doubt on the credibility of the initial claims made against the individuals involved.

It remains to be seen what implications this development will have on the political landscape. And the relationships between the parties involved.
