DP Gachagua Calls Emergency Meeting After Event Fallout Between Ichung’wah and Wamatangi

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua pledged to hold a crisis meeting to resolve disputes among Kiambu County officials.

During a church service in Kiambu on Sunday, the DP expressed his shock when leaders engaged in a verbal altercation at the same service he attended.

Consequently, Rigathi urged the leaders to work together and promised to organize a meeting to address their disagreements.

“It deeply disturbs me to witness leaders clashing. I urge leaders to collaborate for the county’s progress. Kiambu holds significance for President Ruto and me, given its strong support in 2022. I will call a meeting to find lasting solutions to any conflicts. Please reduce the intense political atmosphere,” he said.

The Deputy President spoke after some county leaders engaged in a heated exchange over the governance and future leadership of the county.

Earlier, the mentioned leaders were National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah and Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi.

Ichung’wah, who spoke first, accused the governor of overseeing a county known for corruption, second only to Nairobi.

“Regarding accountability, as members of Parliament, we have a responsibility to demand it at both national and county government levels,” said Ichung’wah.

“Some issues we’ve raised have been noted by the Auditor General, highlighting Kiambu and Nairobi counties as leading in the misuse of public funds, and that needs to stop.

“We’re not raising these concerns because we dislike our governor or don’t want to work with him, but because it’s our duty as elected officials,” the MP added.

Wamatangi responded to the accusations by stating that the reports referred to past administrations’ mismanagement.

“As an experienced MP and now our Deputy President, familiar with legal matters: should we question you about the Jubilee Government?” Wamatangi clarified.

“When the Auditor General releases a report, should we direct our queries to you? Your Excellency, let’s be fair; the Auditor General’s reports relate to previous governments. I am addressing issues involving the administrations of Nyoro (James), Waititu (Ferdinand), and Kabogo (William).”

Gachagua also mentioned that he invited all governors to an Intergovernmental Budget and Economic Council (IBEC) meeting at his Karen home on Monday, focusing on the flooding situation and multi-agency response.
