Details of US Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo’s Trip to Nairobi as Kenya’s Geopolitical Stature Grows
The United States Office of Public Affairs verified on Wednesday that Gina Raimondo, the US Secretary of Commerce, is scheduled to visit Nairobi from April 23 to April 25. During her stay, she will interact with a range of stakeholders, including President William Ruto.
As per the announcement from the US government, Raimondo is anticipated to journey to the nation to strengthen business ties with Nairobi.
Raimondo is anticipated to arrive in the country accompanied by a group of private sector representatives and individuals from the President’s Advisory Council on Doing Business in Africa (PAC-DBIA).
A primary focus for Gina is to capitalize on Kenya’s thriving digital environment, which offers a substantial opportunity for American investors.
“She will highlight the US -Kenya bilateral commercial and investment relationship and flourishing digital space in Kenya, and throughout Africa, that is helping to shape the world for the better and create exciting opportunities for partnerships with the United States,” read the statement in part.

Secretary Raimondo is anticipated to engage in discussions with government representatives from Kenya, as well as ministers responsible for trade and digital affairs from various African nations throughout her stay.
Moreover, Gina will also interact with private sector representatives from both the United States and Kenya, as well as convene discussions with women and youth leaders within the fields of science, technology, and creative industries.
The decision is a component of the US’s plan to enhance ties with African nations, aiming to offset China’s increasing presence in East Africa.
It appears that Kenya and the United States have been fostering improved relations, evident from the frequent communication between US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and President Ruto of Kenya over the past year.
On March 9, it was announced that Blinken reached out to the President regarding the mission in Haiti, which is anticipated to be led by Kenya.
Additionally, the visit follows closely on the heels of Deputy Secretary for Commerce Don Graves’ trip to South Africa in November 2023, where he pursued a comparable agenda.
Graves allegedly advocated for enhancing ties with the President’s Advisory Council on Doing Business in Africa (PAC-DBIA), formed in 2014 to advise on strategies for bolstering US-Africa relations.
