Details of Ruto’s Closed-Door Meeting With Catholic Bishops at State House After ‘Oppression’ Outcry
President William Ruto convened a gathering with the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB) at State House in Nairobi on Friday, April 12th.
The gathering was called together to tackle the urgent concerns highlighted by the Catholic Bishops during their press conference on April 11th.
In the meeting, the leader praised the clergy for their support in advancing the government’s development goals, particularly in the fields of health and education.
President Ruto pledged to work alongside religious leaders to enhance the governance of the nation.
“The church is a valuable partner in our development agenda. We appreciate their input in the health and education sectors and look forward to working together to strengthen our country’s governance,” the head of state pronounced.
The gathering occurred the day following the bishops’ expression of concerns regarding several issues within the clergy, urging prompt government intervention.

The KCCB highlighted concerns, including the unjustified increase in the permit fee for missionaries, purportedly raised from Ksh15,000 to Ksh150,000.
During a press conference in Karen, Nairobi, the bishops urged the government to reassess its stance on the tax and abolish it.
“We as a country should be showing gratitude and appreciation. So giving waivers to priests, religious men and women and other social missionary volunteers come to complement our social engagement,” read part of a statement by the KCCB.
The bishops additionally urged for a swift resolution to the ongoing doctors’ strike, emphasizing that the priority should be the well-being of patients.
“We urge the government on one hand, and the doctors on the other hand to seek a working arrangement that does not put the lives of patients at risk so that lives are not lost,” the bishops stated.
Additional concerns brought up by the clergy encompassed the reimbursement of the Ksh2 billion debt owed by the government to hospitals under Catholic administration.
