Deputy President Gachagua Meets Opposition Leader Odinga After Third Wave Protests

Vice President Rigathi Gachagua and opposition leader Raila Odinga have met for the first time since the end of the third wave of antigovernment protests, which left them at odds.

On Friday, August 25, the two leaders convened at the burial of freedom fighter Brigadier John Kiboko in Olkalau, Nyandarua County.

Raila was the first person to appear at the funeral, and he was greeted by a cheering crowd as family members led him to the tent where mourners had gathered.

Before taking a seat, the former prime minister took time to acknowledge those in the tent. He exchanged pleasantries with the local dignitaries before sitting down.

Minutes later, the Vice President entered the room and waved to the crowd.
Since the conclusion of the protests, Gachagua has accused Raila of sabotaging the government and pursuing a share of power.

He has also asserted that Raila, along with former President Uhuru Kenyatta, has sponsored young people to cause chaos and disrupt the country’s tranquility.

Gachagua has failed to condemn police brutality that resulted in the deaths of young people during government protests. Instead, he has heaped praises, garnering the opposition’s criticism.

Raila, on the other hand, has criticized the government for mismanagement of the economy and broken election promises.

The veteran opposition leader demands an audit of the most recent elections, a reduction in the cost of living, and an end to Kenya Kwanza’s interference in Azimio’s affairs.

Azimio has asserted that the government has purchased their MPs, reducing them to a minority in the legislature despite having won more seats than Kenya Kwanza in August of last year’s elections.

Previously, the Vice President had criticized the leader of Azimio la Umoja for his repeated calls for collective action in the country. He has charged Raila with attempting to incite violence and destabilize the government.

Gachagua stated, “We are a democratic nation, and we will not tolerate anyone taking the law into their own hands.” “We will deal with anyone who tries to incite violence.”

Raila had called for a general strike to protest the high cost of living and demand electoral reforms. He stated that the government has failed to meet the requirements of the people and that now is the time for Kenyans to act.

According to the government, Raila’s demands for mass action are unnecessary and will only lead to violence.
