Deputy President Defends UDA Secretary-General Cleophas Malala Amidst Chaos Allegations

On Monday, June 26, Vice President Rigathi Gachagua defended United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Secretary-General Cleophas Malala against charges of leading the party into chaos.

During a press briefing at the UDA party offices, Gachagua lauded Malala’s efforts to increase the party’s activities and rally support for the recruitment campaign.

In addition, Gachagua lauded the chaos witnessed at the Mombasa meeting, noting that it exemplified the magnitude of the party, with various leaders attempting to outsmart one another.

“We are extremely pleased with what Malala is doing. Since he assumed this position, the party has been energized by numerous initiatives. The fact that I observed chaos in Mombasa is a positive development. People only fight for a popular party.

“No one cares about these other briefcase parties because no one is aware of their existence, so the more vicious the leadership struggles, the better for the party,” Gachagua remarked.

In addition, the vice president remarked that the party had developed democratic internal dispute resolution mechanisms.

“The UDA party advocates for internal party policies. Everyone is at liberty to criticize anyone. We fled Jubilee due to the dictatorship there. I have been here and told Malala to correct a few errors; however, I have not done so in public. “Everyone must be accountable,” he remarked.

While alluding to the delay in party grassroots elections, Gachagua indicated that the official dates were moved due to the establishment of the Kenya Kwanza administration.

“We postponed elections because we were forming the government and getting the country moving. We will announce the party elections at the appropriate time, he noted.

Earlier, the Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, Gladys Boss, questioned Malala’s motivations for running the party.

In particular, she questioned whether Malala intended to destroy the party.

“As a member of the UDA, I am personally disappointed with Cleophas Malala’s performance. He has been recruiting members for the UDA, many of whom have been violent.

“I inquired with a few UDA members and they informed me that since the party’s inception, we’ve recruited a record number of members in less than a year. At that time, there was not a single violent UDA meeting.” In an interview on 26 June 2023, Shollei stated the following.
