Deadly Stampede in Yemen’s Capital Sanaa Leaves 78 Dead
According to witnesses, the Houthis fired into the air in an attempt to control the crowds, with one round striking an electrical wire, causing it to explode and causing panic on the ground.
A stampede has killed at least 78 people in the Yemeni capital of Sanaa.
According to Houthi-controlled media, dozens more were reportedly injured during a financial aid distribution event in the Old City.
According to a statement from the country’s Houthi-controlled interior ministry, what transpired was “tragic” and “painful” and was the result of “random money distribution by some merchants without coordination with the Ministry of Interior and without organization.”
The statement continued, “The deceased and injured were transported to hospitals, and two merchants responsible for the incident were arrested.”

In addition, spokesperson Brigadier Al-Ajri stated that an investigation is currently underway and that “we extend our sincere condolences and condolences to all the families of the victims, asking Allah Almighty to keep their hearts patient.”
Eyewitnesses told the Associated Press that the Houthis fired into the air to control the crowds, and one round hit an electrical wire and exploded, causing panic on the ground.
They also reported that the amount of money distributed was 5,000 Yemeni riyals, or approximately £16.
Houthi rebels blocked journalists from entering the money distribution site, the Associated Press reported.
Motaher al-Marouni, a senior health official, stated that at least 13 of the injured were in critical condition.
Since 2014, Iran-backed Houthis have ruled Sanaa.
Saudi Arabia attempted to intervene in 2015, but the conflict later became a proxy war between Iran and Saudi Arabia, resulting in the deaths of more than 150,000 people – one of the worst humanitarian disasters in history.
