DCI Officers Seize Cache of Explosives, Arrest Two Suspects in Kisii

DCI detectives from Kisii Central have successfully seized a cache of explosives and arrested two individuals in connection with the illicit possession of the hazardous materials.

According to a statement released by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Monday evening, the operation was carried out based on actionable intelligence that pointed to the transportation of the explosives.

The suspects, two men aged 28 and 49, were apprehended along the Kisii-Oyugis Road. Their arrest came after law enforcement officers flagged down the trailer they were traveling in during a routine operation.

Upon searching the vehicle, the officers discovered three cartons containing 459 pieces of water gel explosives (V6), along with two detonating cords.

The items were hidden in plain sight, a tactic commonly used by smugglers to avoid detection.

Both suspects are currently in lawful custody at Mosocho Police Station, where investigations into the case are ongoing.

The DCI emphasized that the explosives and the trailer involved in the transportation have been seized and will be treated as evidence.

Meanwhile, the suspects are being processed for arraignment, where they are expected to face charges related to the illegal possession of explosives.

Water gel explosives, which consist of an aqueous ammonium nitrate solution that acts as an oxidizing agent, are widely used in civil applications, especially in mining.

These explosives have largely replaced dynamite in most countries due to their safety, ease of use, and cost-effectiveness.

Water gel explosives are considered less toxic and hazardous compared to traditional dynamite, making them the preferred choice for various industrial applications, particularly in quarries where they are used to blast rocks.

Authorities are continuing their investigations to determine the origin of the explosives and the intended destination, as well as any potential links to criminal or terrorist activities.
