DCI Arrests Government Employees for Forged Academic Certificates to Boost Pay

A government employee from the Sports, Arts and Social Development Fund (SASDF) was apprehended by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) for fabricating academic documents to progress their career within the Public Service.

In a statement released on Sunday, the DCI disclosed that the employee had forged credentials indicating he sat for his Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) at Marsabit Boys, a school that did not exist during the 1998 national examinations.

The DCI further revealed that the employee had neither registered for nor taken theย exams,ย despite carrying documents suggesting he had done so.

Investigations showed that the suspect had dropped out of form two, though the school he attended was not specified.

In a similar case, another government employee was arrested after DCI investigations determined that his academic papers falsely indicated he sat for his KCSE in 2010 at St. Mark Boys High School, Cherengany. However, the school did not exist at that time, and the certificate’s code belonged to Ruthimitu Secondary.

The DCI’s investigations also uncovered that the second suspect had dropped out of form 2.

Additionally, a third suspect was arrested by the DCI for falsifying a 2011 KCSE certificate from Starays Hope Community Center, Nairobi.

The three suspects were brought before the Milimani Courts on Friday and charged with forgery, making a document without authority, and falsifying a document.

These arrests were part of a crackdown triggered by a Public Service Commission (PSC) report, which revealed that over 2,000 government employees had forged their academic certificates to obtain jobs or promotions.

The government has reported losses exceeding Ksh9 billion due to the issue of fake academic certificates.

The Ministry of Interior was identified as having the highest number of employees with fraudulent certificates.

Moreover, the problem of dubious qualifications extends to county governments, with an audit in Migori County uncovering 290 employees with fake certificates.
