Cyber Attack on ECitizen Portal Prompts Gov’t to Offer Visa-On-Arrival for Travelers
As a result of an issue with the processing of e-visas, the government has given instructions to airlines that fly to Kenya to board passengers without valid visas.
Outages on the eCitizen platform caused a delay in the processing of e-visa applications, according to a statement issued on Thursday by the Principal Secretary of the Foreign Affairs Department, Korir Sing’oei.
“Because of this, visitors will be able to obtain their visas upon arrival at any of Kenya’s entry points. Additionally, the government would like to advise any airlines that are transporting passengers to Kenya, he explained.
Kenyans can access a variety of government services, including the ability to renew their driver’s licenses and passports, apply for company registration services, and apply for visas, through a platform called eCitizen.

On Thursday, the ICT Cabinet Secretary Eliud Owalo stated unequivocally that the system had been blocked by hackers, which resulted in the portal being unavailable.
“A cyber attack was launched against the e-Citizen platform, however, no data was obtained or lost as a result of the attack. ‘We are addressing that, and we are not just coming up with fast corrective steps to handle the present issue but are also ensuring that we construct an elaborate risk mitigation framework,’ Owalo stated on a morning radio show. “We are addressing that, and we are not just coming up with instant remedial measures to solve the current situation.
“In this particular instance, they attempted to jam the system by making a greater number of requests into the system than is typical, which resulted in the system’s performance becoming more sluggish.”
He was able to uncover the fact that the hacking was carried out by a group that goes by the name Anonymous Sudan.
