CS Murkomen Unveils Cutting-Edge JKIA Tech for Enhanced Passenger Screening

Kipchumba Murkomen, cabinet secretary for transport, unveiled on Tuesday four new initiatives that will be implemented at JKIA to increase efficiency and enhance the passenger experience.

The CS disclosed, during a tour of the airport with Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) representatives, that to increase security, the government intended to implement state-of-the-art screening technology at the main entrance.

Using the novel technology, passengers will no longer be required to disembark from the vehicles to undergo screening in a distinct chamber upon their arrival, as specified by the CS.

Additionally, to increase efficiency, Murkomen stated that a self-check-in system would be implemented at the airport. The objective of this measure is to alleviate the protracted lines that have been observed at the checkpoints of the airport.

“Airlines will be required to upgrade their ticket printing to avoid long queues. We shall also deploy technology in the Advance Passenger Information (APS) system to provide prior information on passengers for more efficiency and enhanced security,” Murkomen stated.

Additionally, KAA was assigned the responsibility of constructing canopies to shelter passengers in inclement weather, including precipitation.

The government intends to enhance the customer experience by increasing the number of charging ports, constructing more pleasant seating areas, and providing complimentary Wi-Fi at the airport. Additionally, breastfeeding facilities will be renovated.

The prioritization of enhancing the drainage system was also emphasized in light of the persistent heavy rainfall observed in the city and throughout the nation.

Significantly, Murkomen’s excursion to the airport occurred after the stranding of passengers caused by flooding observed in specific areas of the airport.

“Transport CS Kipchumba Murkomen has today announced measures aimed at enhancing service delivery at JKIA. Central to these reforms is a Service Charter that will bring together all govt agencies operating at the airport under a one-stop shop to provide seamless service to passengers,” KAA noted in a statement.

“The airport charter will bring together Immigration, Customs, Kenya Airport Police Unit (KAPU), Port Health, the Kenya Plant Health Inspectorate Service (KEPHIS) & other Govt. Agencies at the airport under the leadership of KAA,”

Conversely, a proposition was put forth to establish an independent police force at the airport, with the responsibility of supervising overall security. Regarding this matter, discussions will take place with Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki.
