CS Murkomen Reveals Ambitious Plans to Construct Railway Linking Kenya to Atlantic Ocean
Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen announced on Friday the government’s intention to build a state-of-the-art railway connecting the Kenyan coast with the Atlantic Ocean, marking it as one of Africa’s longest railway endeavors.
Speaking at the launch of the Kenya Railway Strategic Plan (2023 to 2027), Murkomen emphasized the project’s alignment with Kenya’s economic aspirations.
Expressing his dedication to realizing this ambitious vision, Murkomen emphasized that the railway would bolster trade between Kenya and various international partners as it traverses multiple countries, including the Democratic Republic of Congo, ultimately terminating on the coast of Cameroon.
Murkomen articulated his belief in the transformative potential of robust infrastructure, stating, “I believe that Africa can be better connected if we invest in the necessary infrastructure to facilitate both interpersonal connections and business growth.”
He underscored the growing significance of railway transport as a catalyst for Kenya’s national development agenda.

Emphasizing his commitment to overseeing the project’s execution, Murkomen highlighted its significance in fulfilling the aspirations of Kenya’s founding leaders.
He expressed optimism that adherence to the strategic plan would optimize operational efficiency and contribute significantly to the nation’s economic advancement.
In acknowledging the Kenya Railways Service’s pivotal role in transforming the country’s transport landscape, Murkomen outlined government initiatives aimed at enhancing local rail transport.
ย These efforts include modernizing the Madaraka Express, improving the Nairobi Commuter rail system, and upgrading both passenger and freight services on the metered gauge railway.
Furthermore, Murkomen outlined key objectives of the strategic plan, which encompass enhancing railway infrastructure, expanding freight and passenger services, and increasing the market share of the Port of Mombasa, in collaboration with the Kenya Ports Authority.
Additionally, the plan seeks to cultivate a skilled workforce within Kenya Railways and establish robust environmental, social, and governance frameworks.
