CS Kuria Isolated in Nation Media Dispute as Gachagua and EACC Voice Strong Opposition

On Monday, June 19, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua disowned threats made by Trade Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria, who vowed to crack down on Nation Media Group.

Gachagua argued, while speaking at the Kenya Water and Sanitation International Conference and Exhibition in Mombasa, that the current regime is not as autocratic as is commonly believed.

He emphasized that the media should enjoy its constitutionally guaranteed freedom. Therefore, Kuria was criticized for advocating that the government terminate its advertising contracts with Nation Media.

“I disagree with his recommendation that we discontinue advertising with you. We should allow you to continue doing your job because we are a democracy. Gachagua remarked, “Ours is to call you out,” adding that Kuria went overboard.

Gachagua escalated his attack on Nation Media Group and defended CS Kuria against his critics.

The DP stated, “I concur with Moses Kuria that you have gone rogue and are part of the Azimio brigade attempting to overthrow the government.”

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) also toned down Kuria’s statements, cautioning that the CS was at fault for threatening and attempting to influence procurement and tender awarding.

EACC added that its constitutional mandate was to provide advice to state officials regarding the proclamation of goods and services.

“Article 227 of the Constitution mandates a fair, equitable, transparent, competitive, and cost-effective system for public procurement.

EACC noted in a strongly worded statement, “Therefore, no person or organization may lawfully be denied the opportunity to participate in any public procurement except as permitted by law.”

The investigative agency also spoke out against the victimization of public officials who legally engage other organizations.

“Accordingly, the EACC advises all state and public officers to strictly adhere to the laws governing the management of public affairs, including the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution and the Leadership and Integrity Act of 2012,” it stated.
